This blog is going to be a mix of what I'm up to now, a look back at some of my past favourites, maybe some equipment and technical stuff and whatever else you would like to see...but primarily with a photographic theme.

Pluto...a trigger with more

I'm a sucker for a cool gadget and this little beastie is seriously cool. The Pluto trigger is multi-talented...in fact it has 24 individual modes including timelapse, HDR, startrail, laser, lightning, voice, motion, smile... and if that's too tech for you, it works beautifully as a basic release. A laser is provided as part of the kit ...when an object breaks the beam the shutter fires (how cool is that!).

All of this is controlled via an app on your smartphone. The phone and trigger communicate with bluetooth. (During a timelapse the trigger works independently of the phone once the exposure is started.) There are pages of step-by-step instructions that come with the app (just as well as I would never remember how to drive all the various combinations).

The app also comes with a few added bonuses. In the Tools section is a Depth-of-Field calculator, a sun position calculator (with sunrise and sunset times for your specific location) a ND filter calculator (works out the shutter speed you need after adding your ND filter) and a starscape calculator (gives you the correct shutter speed to get dot point stars for your location, camera and focal length).

The Pluto trigger can be mounted on the camera hotshoe using the provided screw mount. There is no electrical contact via the hotshoe. All communication with the camera is via a model-specific cable.

I haven't tried every function of this device, (as much as I wanted I couldn't test the laser/flash function as none of my speedlights or strobes had standard sync ports to suit the supplied cable and some other functions are a bit obscure and I'm never likely to use them) but those that I have tried all worked seamlessly. At around $150 (AUD) this little gadget gives a lot of bang for your buck!
