Learn to see light
Hi All
I often refer to photography as painting with light. Without light there is no photography.
So, being able to recognise good light is a huge step toward improving your images. Being able to manipulate and control light is what separates the good from the average and the great...but that is a whole different kettle of fish.
Over the past week or so, I have been photographing a tree...morning and afternoon...for a couple of reasons. Primarily to record the disappearance of leaves (and as it happened...quite by accident) the effect the quality of light had on the appearance of the tree.
The shots were all taken from the same spot at roughly the same times of day, 9am and 3pm, give or take and hour or so.
How much more vibrant is the image on the left? A little bit of directional sunlight makes a huge difference.
Take a look at the following sequence...see how much the light changes the image. From these, you can see that selecting the right light for your subject can make all the difference. Next time you find a great composition ask yourself, "is the light right?" it could make the difference between an ok shot and a fantastic one.
Catch you next time.
