Time travel update
By now you will have all heard that the new Doctor is a woman…well, I have to say… that this post has absolutely nothing to do with Dr Who.
If you read my blog from last week you will know that I have been head down, bum up trawling through The Advocate neg archive and associated records to put together an exhibition (to be jointly hosted by the Burnie Regional Art Gallery and Burnie Regional Museum) to mark the handing over of The Advocate collection to the museum for digitizing and conservation. The selected negs are now in the hands of the museum for scanning and printing. I can’t wait to see these images enlarged and on the wall. The clarity and sharpness from a glass plate neg is amazing.
While crawling around among the vinegar scented boxes (see last week’s post for an explanation) I discovered something that filled me with dread…a cardboard carton packed full of glass plates.
So what, you may ask?
Glass plates are fragile…they are not designed to be stacked. I have fears that those on the bottom of the carton may not have survived…I haven’t had time to investigate fully.
What I have discovered, is that these negs pre-date the first of the journals that record the subject matter of the shots, so content could be a bit of a mystery. I have had a bit of a sneak peek…and there is some absolute gold in these boxes.
When time allows, I will be unpacking the cartons and re-packaging the contents in museum quality wrapping and boxing. I will keep you posted.
Another bit of news…Tuff Turf (a Melbourne-based client) advised me this week that they are printing one of my images 6 metres wide on a banner for a trade display…that’s a first for me. Hope to have an image of it to share with you for next week.
Catch you then.
